Lithological description
Fine to very coarse gravel, sandy with local cobbles and variable carbonate content. At the top usually a 1- to 3-m-thick sandy loam bed.
Depositional setting
Fluvial (western Meuse). Youngest terrace.
Definition of lower boundary
Sharp contact with various Neogene, Paleogene, Cretaceous and Paleozoic units. Locally incised into Caberg or Gronsveld Member (Beegden Formation).
Definition of upper boundary
Commonly exposed at the surface. Locally, sharp contact with periglacial aeolian and local river loam and sand (Boxtel Formation).
Thickness indication
Up to about 20 m.
Geographical distribution
Southeasternmost part of the Netherlands, directly along the Meuse river.
Regional correlation
North Sea; not present; UK: not present; GER: ?; BEL: Stokkem Formation, Lanklaar Formation (Maasmechelen and Geistingen Members) (Gullentops et al. 2001).

Named after the village of Oost-Maarland in the southeastern Netherlands.
