Status
Formal (Westerhoff 2003).
Lithological description

White to light grey medium to very coarse sand, very gravelly (sporadic oolitic chert), partially lithified. Coarsening-upward sequences with poorly developed clay layers.

Depositional setting

Fluvial braidplain, partly marine at the base.

Definition of lower boundary

Basal quartz-rich sand (Waubach Sands, cf. Doppert et al. 1975). Sharp contact with shallow-marine sand and clay (Breda Formation) and with finer fluvial sand (Inden Formation).

Definition of upper boundary

Commonly exposed at the surface. Elsewhere, sharp contact with fluvial clay (Brunssum Member, Kieseloolite Formation).

Up to about 110 m.

Southeastern Netherlands.
Regional correlation
North Sea: not present; UK: not present; GER: Hauptkies Member, Kieseloolith Formation; BEL: Donk Member, Mol Formation.

late Miocene - early Pliocene.

Origin of name
Named after the village of Waubach, close to the German border in the southeasternmost Netherlands.
