Lithologische beschrijving
Alternation of thick beds of red-brown, sandy clay- and siltstones, clear halite and white to pink anhydrite and carbonate beds. Evaporitic minerals are frequently present as nodules in the claystones. The original bedding lamination of the claystones is generally disturbed by displacive nodule growths and mudcracks (see Mijnlieff et al 2011, Appendix B).
Afzettingsmilieu
In the saline lake and its fringes which covered the basin center (Fryberger et al. 2011 and Gast et al. 2010).
Definitie ondergrens
Placed at the top of the Lower Silverpit Claystone Member, which is characterised by the absence of thick evaporite intervals.
Definitie bovengrens
Placed at the base of the Upper Silverpit Claystone Member, which is characterised by the absence of thick evaporite intervals.
Dikte indicatie
Up tp 715 m in G13-01.

Holostratotype

3258 - 3438 m (180 m)
Comments:
It is generally assumed that the halite beds were formed during dry periods. It is assumed that the basinward extent of the Slochteren Formation sandstone-tongues are also related to these dry periods. Therefore, for correlation purposes, the evaporite-rich intervals may be correlated with the Upper and/or Lower Slochteren member.
