Code
ZEZ2H
Status
Formal (NAM & RGD 1980). Amended (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1994).
Lithological description
Consists mainly of halite. Three cycles can be recognised and are separated by polyhalite beds (Geluk 1995). The lower cycle is characterised at its base by interbedded anhydrite, claystone and polyhalite layers in the salt. The middle cycle is built up of several sub-cycles, with an upwards-increasing potassium content. Along the edge of the salt basin potassium-magnesium-rich layers occur. The upper cycle consists of very pure rock salt, with some potassium-magnesium salt layers near the top. Among the minerals identified are kieserite, carnallite and sylvite.
Depositional setting
Salina deposit, marine evaporite.
Definition of lower boundary
The Z2 Basal Anhydrite forms the base of the salt.
Definition of upper boundary
The base of the Grey Salt Clay Member forms the top of the Z3 Salt Member.
Thickness indication
Depositional thickness 1000-1250 m, but thickness often is increased as a result of salt flow, sometimes to over 2000 m.
