Lithological description
Dark greyish brown organoclastic detritus, slightly clayey and mainly of physically disintegrated peat, and detrital gyttja with silt and fine sand (in layers and matrix).
Depositional setting
Freshwater to brackish lagoonal, lacustrine, rich plant growth.
Definition of lower boundary
Commonly sharp contact with peat (Hollandveen Member, Nieuwkoop Formation), clastic tidal deposits (Wormer Member, Naaldwijk Formation) or periglacial sand (Boxtel Formation), locally gradual transition.
Definition of upper boundary
Commonly gradual transition into high-energy clastic tidal deposits (Almere Bed, Naaldwijk Formation), locally sharp contact.
Thickness indication
Up to about 1 m (Menke et al. 1989).

Lake IJssel area in the central Netherlands.
