Along the basin fringe, in places where an argillaceous development prevails, it may be impossible to distinguish the Red-brown Salt Clay Member with certainty. In such cases this unit and the Z1 Middle Claystone Member may be lumped with the overlying Z2 Middle Claystone Member into an informal unit: the Zechstein Middle Claystone member (ZEFRM).
