Informal (Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe 1995).
Lithological description
Claystone. All deposits that belong to the Epen Formation, but are not attributed to either the Ubachsberg Member or the Geverik Member, can be referred to as the informal main Epen member. Where the Epen Formation is split in two by an intercalated Ubachsberg Member, the interval underlying the Ubachsberg Member is also called main Epen member.
Depositional setting
Cyclic repeated delta progradation into a predominantly lacustrine basin.
Age
Serpukhovian - Bashkirian.
