Velsen Bed

Code
NUNAWOVE
Status
Formal (Weerts 2003). First described by Bennema (1954).
Lithologische beschrijving

Dark grey clay, firm, organic, laminated, commonly rooted with reed, locally abundant Peringia ulvae (partly in beds), intercalated silt, sand and organic detritus laminae. Upward increase in fine sand and decrease in organics.

Afzettingsmilieu

Infralittoral lagoonal, brackish; more saline to the top (Bennema 1954; Van Straaten 1957).

Definitie ondergrens

Commonly, conformable transition into peat (Basisveen Bed, Nieuwkoop Formation).

Definitie bovengrens

Unconformable, erosive contact with tidal sand (Naaldwijk Formation). Locally offshore, unconformable contact with marine sand (Southern Bight Formation) or mud (Urania Formation; Rijsdijk et al. 2005).

Dikte indicatie
Up to about 2.5 m.
Geografische verbreiding
Relatively small and scattered areas, primarily in the central-western Netherlands but also in the southwest and north (Vos & Van Kesteren 2000; Westerhoff et al. 2003).
Regionale correlatie
