To some extent, researching the seabed involves drilling and sampling methods that differ from those used on land. To sample the surface of the seabed, box core samples are taken. “Vibrocore” drilling methods allow undisturbed core samples to be collected at greater depths. The data currently available from seabed sampling come mainly from box core samples of the upper 50 cm of the seabed. The measurements of the grain-size distribution of seabed samples in the laboratory is identical to the measurements of the samples of soil and subsoil from drillings on land.
Seabed research on the map
Seabed research can be found on the map under Subsurface research.
Under seabed research the following types of data are available:
- Sample descriptions
- Chemical analyses
- Grain-size distribution
