Lithological description
Grey to yellowish white very fine to fine sand, non-calcareous, partly micaceous, common clay pebbles. At the top, very fine sand with intercalated clay laminae and lenses, as well as bluish grey clay, non-calcareous, micaceous, with organic horizons. Overall fining-upward sequence. Locally bioturbated.
Depositional setting
Brackish inshore (estuarine) tidal, including channel, sand flat, mudflat, and marsh.
Definition of lower boundary
Sharp unconformable contact with coarser tidal sand (Hoogerheide Member, Waalre Formation).
Definition of upper boundary
Sharp unconformable contact with river sand (Waalre Formation, undifferentiated) or periglacial sand (Boxtel Formation, locally gravelly Beuningen Bed).
Thickness indication
Up to about 5 m. In its western reach, possibly up to 80 m (cf. Van Voorthuysen 1957).
